Advanced Breeding Technology
Dairy genetics help to predict how characteristics such as milk production, increased solids or health and management traits are passed onto the next generation of cows. The effect of breeding decisions is cumulative, meaning they build over the generations and have a key role to play in farm profitability. At EDL, the milking cows are superior breed Friesian cows. For breed improvement, Sexed semen from males that have the best genetic traits is used for artificial insemination to the heifers. One of the income streams at EDL is selling the in-calf heifers to farmers, therefore improving the breed and hence milk productivity.
Task
The goal with sexed semen is to produce a calf of a specific sex. Sexed semen is widely available now, and many dairy producers are using it to obtain more (and better) heifer calves.
